Jo Koy’s dynamic energy on stage, mixed with his charismatic and approachable persona, has fans hailing him as “a comic for the people.” He combines his lively physical presence with sharp observational humor to get inspirational, family-based laughs. His unique, energetic stand-up comedy is a big hit with fans of all ages and racial backgrounds.
In 2005, Jo Koy received his highest honor after his performance on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.” That night, Koy became one of only a select few to ever receive a standing ovation on the show. In 2006, Koy was part of Carlos Mencia’s “Punisher Tour,” performing stand-up comedy in 10,000-seat arenas across the country. Named one of the “10 Comics to Watch” in 2007 by Daily Variety, Koy has also performed on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” and “Last Call with Carson Daly.” His first “Comedy Central Presents” special aired in 2008.
Born in Tacoma, a suburb of Washington, Koy has been performing and entertaining audiences since he was a young child. Koy credits his mother for his comedic talent and love of the stage. From an early age, his mother encouraged him and his sister — now a singer in Las Vegas — to take part in school talent shows and stage impromptu performances in front of family and friends.
Koy is now far removed from the young, aspiring comedian who officially started his career in 1994 at an open mic night in a Las Vegas coffee house. He has starred in several TV stand-up specials, from BET’s “Comic View” to “Jamie Foxx Presents: Laffapalooza!” He has won “Showtime at the Apollo” and has performed for the troops as part of the USO Tour. Koy appeared in multiple episodes of VH1’s “I Love the 70s,” “I Love the 80s” and “I Love the 90s.”
