Venue Information
The Empty Space’s mission is to provide professional quality live theatre to the community of Bakersfield. Established in 2003 by current executive director Brian Sivesind, The Empty Space has consistently created opportunities for local actors, directors, designers, and technicians to work in a creative environment that allows them to express their artistic ideas, while encouraging them to continue to study and improve their craft.
The Empty Space is proud to be one of only a few donation-based theatres in North America. While many theatres often struggle to stay open, even while charging regular ticket prices, The Empty Space has survived and flourished for the last 11 years on the generosity of its patrons. Additionally, The Empty Space has organized fundraisers for charitable organizations, such as The Alliance Against Family Violence and Sexual Assault, RAINN, The Anne Frank House, and the American Foundation for Equal Rights.
Run by a board of directors consisting of dedicated members of the community who donate time, money, and talent, The Empty Space has grown into one of the premiere places to view live theatre in Kern County. From the plays of Shakespeare to Broadway musicals such as Spring Awakening and Avenue Q, from American classics such as The Miracle Worker and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof to modern provocative plays such as 8 and Angels in America, The Empty Space has been dedicated to bringing the experience of live theatre to as many people as possible, with the help of the generous support of the community.
The Empty Space’s audience entrance is located at the northeast corner of our building through the double doors.
